WHAT IT IS
Spam Assassin is a spam filtering program that onShore has implemented on our mail servers to help users reduce the amount of spam they receive. When we turn on the service, incoming mail messages that are tagged as spam will be moved into a mail folder called 'spam'. In order to divert spam mail from your inbox, you must train the filter so that it learns what you consider spam. If users consistently train the filter by moving spam into their spam folder, and moving legitimate messages out of their spam folder, over time the amount of SPAM received will be reduced.

HOW TO USE SPAM ASSASSIN
Any mail that you consider junk or spam should be reclassified as spam by moving it into your 'spam' folder. The spam filter will analyze the reclassified mail, and others of its kind, in order to filter it from your inbox in the future. The more spam it learns about, the more it will filter.

CHECKING YOUR DSPAM STATISTICS this section is legacy; needs new content/screenshot
The DSPAM program has a user interface that displays the statistics for your spam account. You can access your DSPAM statistics by going to the same url as used for webmail, followed by "/dspam". For example, if you are a user at Dearborn Tower you can check your DSPAM stats by going to:
http://mail.dearborntower.net/dspam
When prompted to log in use your email account user name and password.

|
Once logged in, you will see your DSPAM statistics displayed on the upper right hand side of the screen.
The number "caught" is the number of spam emails diverted from your inbox.
The number "learned" is the number of spam emails you have forwarded to your spam account.
The amount "scanned" is the total number of emails that have been delivered to your inbox.

SPAM ASSASSIN FALSE POSITIVES
Once in a while, Spam Assassin may report mail as spam that you do not consider spam. If you believe you are missing mail, check your spam folder to make sure that it was not filtered out. Your spam folder may be accessed through Webmail—your mail client—as long the spam folder has been subscribed to or auto-detected, or from webmail. Inside the spam folder is a list of your filtered emails. If you find an email that should not have been filtered out, move the email out of the spam folder, either into your INBOX or another folder. Spam Assassin will then consider the email as a false positive.
